** The Death Penalty

There has been a lot of debate about the death penalty. People are divided on this issue. Some are for it while others are against it. Some, however, do not know where they stand as far as this issue is concerned.

Some say that, if one is found guilty of killing a person (intentionally) then the murderer should feel the same pain that they subjected the ‘killed’ person to. An eye for an eye, they say.

Some others think differently. The say that, if a court of law finds that murdering is a crime then why should they sentence anyone to death (which simply means ‘murdering the murderer’). This is utterly ironical, they say. This is a case of preaching water and drinking wine. You catch the drift.

I am confused about this bandying of disparate opinions and positions. But there is one thing I believe: Life is precious and should be handled carefully.

What do you have to say about this state of affairs?

I dont think that the death penalty is a good way to punish. if you think about it, it makes no sense. if we kill the person that kills someone, how are we any better than them. Not only that, but we still dont know what happens after death. so if we kill someone that committed a serious crime we dont know if by killing them we are doing them a favor or not. thats my stand on that.

We don't have this problem in India.

Life sentences last 14 years long (since the Government lets them off for good behaviour; how bad can you be in prison?). Death sentences are usually reduced to life sentences (through money or power) and of course the life sentence becomes 14 years so the murderer/rapist/serial killer is free in 14 years or lesser.

Also they let convicts go free on birthdays of political leaders. So you see we don't have problems with the death penalty.

Usually, civilized people are against death penalty.
But if they are personally involved in one case (i.e. for example a murdered family member), many will run after revenge (using Justice or not).
It's not an easy question.
Beside, I am not sure that death penalty reduced murders, according statistics published in countries applying this sentence.
Maybe before considering this question, we should ask why jail sentences are not always totally applied.
And beside, why jails are controlled by gangs?
Why the right of criminals prevails victims one?
Why in so many cases (countries), jail life is not a so strong penalty? (I mean condition of living)
Just consider a criminal living a poor life. Going to jail when living conditions are very good, is not a so hard punishment...

If you have a mass-murderer or rapist, I think they should get the death penalty. Why would you want a cold-blooded killer or rapist running around? It doesn't make any sense. I'm not usually so hardcore, but let me tell you, I don't like people who repeatedly harm others and get away with it.

As a lawyer, I have seen some of the most heinous crimes ever committed but I still believe that even death penalty could not hinder criminals to commit such act. So, I am against death penalty too.

An eye to eye is not the solution in anyway.

As said life is precious, so let's handle it carefully.
